Arduino Micro with Headers – Compact ATmega32U4 Development Board with USB HID
Compact Arduino development board with ATmega32U4, 20 digital I/O, 12 analogue inputs, 7 PWM channels and native USB communication for keyboards, mice, controllers and automation projects.
Arduino Micro with Headers is a compact microcontroller board based on the ATmega32U4, designed for projects where you need plenty of I/O connections in a small form factor.
One of its key advantages is native USB communication built directly into the microcontroller. Arduino Micro therefore does not require a separate USB-to-serial processor and can appear to a computer as a serial device, keyboard or mouse.
The with Headers version comes with pin headers already installed, allowing the board to be inserted directly into a breadboard or connected to jumper wires, sensors and other modules.
Why Choose Arduino Micro?
- Compact design – approximately 48 × 18 mm, ideal for breadboards and compact electronic devices.
- ATmega32U4 with native USB – direct communication with a computer without a separate USB-to-serial converter.
- USB HID support – Arduino can operate as a keyboard or mouse.
- 20 digital I/O pins – plenty of connections for sensors, buttons, LEDs, relays and other modules.
- 12 analogue input channels – suitable for projects requiring multiple analogue sensors.
- 7 PWM channels – useful for LED dimming, motor drivers and other PWM-controlled devices.
- Pre-installed headers – ready for immediate use on a breadboard.
Native USB – Arduino Can Become a Keyboard or Mouse
One of the main advantages of the ATmega32U4 microcontroller is its integrated USB functionality.
Arduino Micro can appear to a computer as a virtual serial port while also supporting USB HID functions.
Using the Keyboard and Mouse libraries, you can create custom:
- macro keyboards,
- USB controllers,
- control panels,
- simulator controllers,
- custom keyboards,
- mice and other input devices.
This makes Arduino Micro particularly attractive for projects requiring direct interaction with a computer.
Compact Design for Breadboards and Prototyping
Arduino Micro is approximately 48 mm long and 18 mm wide, allowing it to fit easily onto a standard solderless breadboard.
The installed pin headers enable fast connections without soldering, making it particularly convenient for:
- prototype development,
- circuit testing,
- education,
- connecting sensors,
- developing custom devices.
20 Digital Pins, 12 Analogue Inputs and 7 PWM Channels
Despite its compact dimensions, Arduino Micro provides a generous number of input and output connections.
- 20 digital I/O pins,
- 7 PWM outputs,
- 12 analogue input channels,
- UART,
- I²C / TWI,
- SPI via the ICSP header,
- external interrupts.
The analogue inputs offer 10-bit resolution, providing 1024 possible measurement values.
ATmega32U4 – Proven AVR Platform
The microcontroller runs at 16 MHz and includes:
- 32 KB Flash memory,
- 2.5 KB SRAM,
- 1 KB EEPROM.
Approximately 4 KB of the 32 KB Flash memory is reserved for the bootloader.
EEPROM allows settings and other data to remain stored even after the board is powered off.
UART, I²C, SPI and USB Communication
Arduino Micro offers several standard communication interfaces, allowing it to connect to a wide range of sensors, displays and modules.
- UART: RX and TX for serial communication.
- I²C / TWI: SDA and SCL connections for sensors, displays and other I²C devices.
- SPI: available through the ICSP connector and corresponding SPI pins.
- USB: native USB communication directly through the ATmega32U4 microcontroller.
Power via Micro USB or VIN
Arduino Micro can be powered directly through the Micro USB connector or from an external power source.
The recommended external input voltage through VIN is 7–12 V.
The board can operate over a wider external input range, but Arduino recommends 7–12 V for normal and stable operation.
Important: when using higher input voltages, the onboard linear regulator may generate more heat. For normal operation, remain within the recommended 7–12 V range.
What Projects Is Arduino Micro Suitable For?
- USB HID projects – keyboards, mice, macro controllers and control panels.
- Robotics – connecting sensors, motor drivers and user controls.
- Automation – controlling devices, relays and actuators.
- Sensor systems – 12 analogue channels allow multiple analogue sensors to be connected.
- Education – learning programming, electronics and microcontrollers.
- Breadboard projects – the compact format is ideal for solderless prototyping.
- Custom embedded devices – small dimensions make the board suitable for compact projects.
With Headers Version – Ready for Immediate Use
This Arduino Micro version comes with pin headers already installed and soldered.
There is no need to solder headers before use. Simply insert the board into a breadboard or connect it with DuPont jumper wires and other modules.
This makes it the most convenient version for prototyping, education and rapid circuit testing.
